Nail Salon Etiquette: What Your Nail Tech Wishes You Knew

Most nail techs are too polite to say certain things out loud. But after years behind the table, I can tell you that some habits really do make a difference in how an appointment goes, for you and for me. This is not a lecture, I promise. It is just an honest, friendly look at the things that would make everyone's experience so much better.
Show Up on Time
This one matters more than most people realize. Nail appointments are timed carefully, and if you walk in fifteen minutes late, that time does not magically reappear at the end. It comes out of the quality of your service. A rushed nail tech cannot do her best work, and you will absolutely notice it in the finished result.
If you are running behind, just send a quick message. Most techs would much rather hear from you in advance so they can adjust than have you walk in mid-session without any warning. A heads up goes a long way.
Know What You Want, Or Be Open About Not Knowing
Here is the thing: both are completely fine. Coming in with a clear reference photo is wonderful. Coming in with zero idea and an open mind is also wonderful. What makes things tricky is coming in with a vague idea and then shifting direction several times once we are already into the appointment.
If you are not sure what you want, just say so at the very beginning. A good nail tech will ask the right questions and help you land on something you will love. That conversation is part of the service, and it is a fun part. It just needs to happen before the product goes on, not after.
Speak Up If Something Does Not Feel Right
If the shape is not quite what you pictured, or the color looks different than you expected on your nail, please say something before the set is finished. It is so much easier to adjust mid-appointment than to fix everything after it has all been cured and filed down.
A good nail tech will not take it personally at all. We genuinely want you to walk out of here happy. What is harder to work with is when a client stays quiet during the whole appointment and then leaves a not so great review afterward. If something feels off, please give your tech the chance to make it right.
Rebook Before You Leave
And on the flip side: if you loved your appointment, rebook before you walk out the door. Good nail techs fill up fast, especially on weekends and evenings. Waiting until your nails are lifting to try to get back in is how you end up waiting three weeks for an opening.
Most private studios, including mine, have limited availability by design. Booking ahead is simply how you keep your spot and keep your nails looking their best.
